Here Be Dragons, a novel (excerpt #7)

As the plane neared closer to Las Vegas, I was worried about what kind of omen the dream held for my trip: would I find myself in a situation where my body was in extreme danger, alone in the dryness? Would there be things I was not even aware of that would make the journey a fool’s errand, due to the fact the Zone was unexplored for a reason? Would I even survive the 3-months?

When we landed, ready to de-board, I stood with a new, possibly fictional, confidence. Proud of my plans, and excited about what the future would hold – basically repressing the fears I had experienced on the plane – I left the plane and headed for the first slot machine I could find, which wasn’t too far of a hunt.
 _____
Placing $5 into the machine, I felt a new potential, winning a return of $100, which I took to be the best omen imaginable for what I was about to do and the place I was doing it.

(Airport casinos are notorious for meek to null payouts, as told to me by frequent travelers to Las Vegas, so I felt immediately that luck was on my side).
